The allocator’s job is to hand out those boxes as quickly as possible, keep the warehouse organized so nothing goes to waste, and work with the garbage collector to reclaim boxes that nobody is using anymore.

Worldwide smartphone shipments are forecast to decline 12.9% year-on-year (YoY) in 2026 to 1.12 billion units, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. This decline will bring the smartphone market to its lowest annual shipment volume in more than a decade. The current forecast represents a sharp decline from our November forecast amid the intensifying memory shortage crisis.

The Saudi riyal sign was proposed for encoding just barely in time for it to be included in version 17.0 of the Unicode Standard, released in September 2025. Proposals for the other currency symbols were submitted too late for version 17.0, so the symbols will be encoded in version 18.0, which will be released in September 2026.
Generative AI Use and Depressive Symptoms Among US Adults
In this survey study of 20 847 US adults, 10.3% reported daily use of generative AI, including 5.3% who used it multiple times per day. Greater levels of AI use were associated with modest increases in depressive symptoms, with odds of at least moderate depression 30% greater among those with daily use, particularly among younger users.
